This initial phase has a single-track catenary-free line measuring 9.7km and a single-track underground line measuring 12.8km. There are 16 stations, of which one is an interchange station with the metro network. The light rail line will operate 28 Alstom Citadis X05 trams, which have a capacity of 209 passengers. They are capable of running on both overhead lines and in catenary-free operation.

Qatar Railways Company awarded the contract for a turnkey tramway system that was to be catenary-free above ground to the LRTC Consortium, comprising Alstom and QDVC, in 2014.
