US-based passenger railroad service Amtrak has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to procure a fleet of single-level passenger rail vehicles to replace the company’s Amfleet I and ex-Metroliner railcars.
Procured rail vehicles must meet the latest federal Tier I safety standards for operations up to 125mph.
The vehicles should be equipped with all the necessary components for Positive Train Control technology.
The RFP includes the delivery of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant equipment with the latest amenities to enhance passenger experience.
“This new state-of-the-art equipment will provide customers with an enjoyable and efficient travel experience.”
This includes improved Wi-Fi equipment, seating arrangement improvement, weather-tight doors and vestibules.
The fleet will also feature larger windows, improved climate control systems for passenger comfort and new restroom designs.
Amtrak Corporate Planning vice-president Byron Comati said: “Nearly half of Amtrak’s annual ridership is comprised of trips along the Northeast Corridor and adjoining corridors, and this new state-of-the-art equipment will provide customers with an enjoyable and efficient travel experience.”
The base order involves the replacement of 75 trainsets or their railcar equivalents.
The Amfleet I railcar fleet has been operating for more than 40 years, while the ex-Metroliner components have been in service for nearly 50 years.
Replacement of the old fleet is part of Amtrak’s plan to upgrade and enhance services. The plan includes procuring new rolling stock and modernising railway infrastructure.
