The PCUMs had previously been stored on Aurizon-owned trackage in Mackay, and were last used for Proserpine sugar traffic in 2017.
Originally built as PCOs in the late 1980s, this wagon series was the last two-TEU 63.5-tonne type introduced by QR prior to the 80-tonne gross types in the early 1990s. The Gympie yard was also used by PN to store new wagons prior to the commencement of intermodal operations in 2005.
With the Toowoomba Range tunnel floor lowering project nearing completion this transfer could potentially be considered "interesting".
