Coal Dock: (Satellite)Railyard: (Satellite)
I knew that US still exported coal from Newport News, VA. The following post taught me that we also export from Baltimore, MD.

This dock can handle ships up to a 41' draft, 650' x 81' and 47' air draft. [MoranShipping] A recent capital improvement program raised the annual capacity of the dock to 14 million tons. In addition to coal from Northern Appalachia (NAPP), it exports coal from the Central (CAPP) and Southern (SAPP) Appalachians and from the Illinois (ILB) and Colorado and Powder River Basins (PRB). "China received 25% of the coal, while the rest went to South Korea and the Netherlands." Even though the dock has dust suppression equipment, residential air pollution continues to be a problem. [gem] A goal of the $60m, 5-year capital improvement was to increase dumping capacity so that they can transfer directly from just-in-time trains to ships and thus avoid storage and double-handling costs. CSX also exports NAPP and CAPP coal from their Toledo Docks. [CSX]
