Bombardier has unveiled its latest range of electric freight rolling stock, which the company says reduces overall energy consumption by around 15%, carries greater loads, and includes Last Mile, the system that allows complete connections with ports and freight terminals, many of which don’t have electrified infrastructure.
Being fitted with Last Mile the latest model of Bombardier TRAXX range, the TRAXX DC3, sees an end to the previous practice of using shunting engines to pull and push trains to and from ferry ports, factories and freight terminals. The train can call on two separate systems to achieve this: a 400 litre diesel tank with an eight-hour range and an on-board battery that enables end-to-end journeys using no fossil fuels at all. The system also proves useful when crossing borders to make deliveries into the border towns in neighbouring countries that have alternative overhead power supplies with different voltages, as is the case between Germany and the Netherlands or Switzerland and Italy.
Unveiled at Bombardier’s Vado Ligure site in North Italy, the company said the train would allow rail operators using it to reduce the total cost of ownership and enable Italian freight operators to expand their businesses. “The new TRAXX DC3 represents a generational leap in the market, a state-of-the-art locomotive, able to maximise energy efficiency, ensuring greater load, traction capacity and lower energy consumption,” said Luigi Corradi, CEO of Bombardier Transportation in Italy.
Also harnessing the latest digital maintenance systems, the TRAXX DC3 uses conditional-based maintenance, which informs the operator’s control centre when parts have deteriorated and need replacing; Big Data, which can reveal patterns in performance that can be used to streamline services; and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the process that connects everyday electrical products so their performance can also be monitored. Using different technologies, Bombardier says operators will have more control over their vehicle’s health in real-time, so maintenance interventions can be accurately estimated, guaranteeing maximum fleet performance and availability.
The Italian rail operators Mercitalia Rail, Captrain Italy and GTS have collectively purchased 50 of Bombardier’s latest model, with the manufacturer also committed to delivering 190 more.
