Wilmar Sugar has released shocking new footage of a crash between a cane train and a harvester as frustrations rise over the number of incidents in milling regions this season so far.
The footage, captured by a camera on a Wilmar loco shows the moment of impact between a fully loaded cane train and a harvester driving across tramways in Ingham, with the miller revealing it was not the only disturbing incident to have occurred within the first two months of the season.
Wilmar Sugar has released shocking new footage of a crash between a cane train and a harvester as frustrations rise over the number of incidents in milling regions this season so far.General manager cane supply and grower relations Paul Giordani said locos could haul in excess of 1000 tonnes of cane at any time meaning they took about a kilometre to stop after brakes are applied.
“As this incident proves, even if a loco driver sees you on the track, he or she may not be able to stop in time to avoid hitting you,” he said.
Wilmar Sugar has released shocking new footage of a crash between a cane train and a harvester as frustrations rise over the number of incidents in milling regions this season so far.Mr Giordani said that despite Wilmar’s widely promoted ‘Use your train brain’ campaign, a minority of people were unnecessarily putting themselves and loco crews at risk by not exercising enough caution around cane trains.
“We’ve had a disappointing run of incidents across our four milling regions since crushing started in June,” he said.
“There have been a number of collisions, including three in the Herbert region, and several near hits.”
Wilmar has received several reports of near hits and collisions so far this season, with all four areas, including Ingham, Burdekin, Proserpine and Sarina “having their fair share”.
