As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are replacing tram tracks on Carlisle Street and Balaclava Road between Westbury Street and Chaddesley Avenue .
The tracks in the work zone are over 50 years old and areas need to be replaced. The track replacement will increase service reliability, safety and ride comfort for passengers. This new infrastructure will improve operational efficiency and reduce the chance of derailments.
Major work will occur on Carlisle Street and Balaclava Road between Nelson Street and Chaddesley Avenue
Major works will commence at 10pm on Friday 4 May and will continue 24 hours a day until 5am Saturday 12 May.
Route 3/3a and 16 services will be affected.

Due to the nature of works, there will be a road closure on Carlisle Street and Balaclava Road between Chapel Street and Orrong Road from 10pm Friday 4 May until 5am Saturday 12 May 2018.
The Carlisle Street / Hotham Street intersection will be closed from 10pm 4 May to 5am Tuesday 9 May. The intersection will open at 5.01am Tuesday 9 May.
If you live in the work area or in a cul de sac (no through road) street and would like to use your vehicle please park in side streets noting the local conditions before works commence.
There will be no vehicle access from:
• Westbury Close
• Carlisle Avenue
• Hawesleigh Avenue
• Kilwinning Court
• Goathlands Street
• Springfield Avenue
• Balmoral Court
• Lempriere Avenue
• Allan Road
• Chaddesley Avenue
The work zone will be fenced kerb to kerb for safety, however footpaths will remain open around the work area to allow pedestrian access to businesses and residences located around the work zone.
Signage and fencing will clearly mark changes to footpath access during the project.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews will be unavoidable but we'll do all we can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm; however there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5am on Saturday 12 May 2018.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
