The Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3A (MUTP 3A) finally got approval from the Central Government on Thursday. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has gave its nod for MUTP-3A projects worth Rs.33,690 crores for the city. The project was pegged at Rs.54,777 crores. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is executing the MUTP 3A project.
Under this project, the Indian Railways has been asked to relook into two greenfield projects namely Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Panvel fast elevated corridor worth Rs.12,331.23 crores and a new suburban corridor between Panvel and Virar, at a cost of Rs.7184.36 crores. Of the 210 air-conditioned electric multiple units (EMUs) rakes planned, the Mumbai will now get only 191.
According to R.S. Khurana, CMD, MRVC, said they will soon begin preliminary work for several projects. The MUTP 3A project had received a budgetary provision of Rs.50 crore in the Interim Budget earlier this year, which was subject to approvals from the CCEA.
Indian Railways was asked to relook at the projects for several reasons, key among which was the infrastructure projects being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
