Chile is looking to revive its freight railway network, dominant during the 1950s but in decay since the 80s, as state-owned rail operator EFE plans to spend a third of its 2017-19 budget (some US$177mn) on repairing rail infrastructure near the country's main ports.
During the 2017 edition of the Rail Latam conference in Santiago, transport undersecretary Carlos Melo said the government hoped to implement a "railway-port logistics platform" in Valparaíso region (V), which would be coordinated with the large-scale port planned for the area of central Chile.
"Today EFE, alongside Valparaíso region's port companies, is developing railway corridors for the ports of Valparaíso and San Antonio. There's guaranteed financing within EFE's three-year investment plan to develop those projects," Melo said.
Another target of the plan is the southern Biobío region (VIII). Melo said a US$120mn new bridge for the region is in the detailed engineering phase.
At a national level, EFE also plans to rehabilitate 28 rail bridges, "and we believe there's an interesting opportunity for possible investors," the official said.
