The Coalition's promise to help ease congestion at the Oaklands rail crossing in Adelaide's south-west falls well short of the funding required, the State Government has said.
During a visit to Adelaide yesterday, Malcolm Turnbull promised $40 million towards separating the Seaford rail line from the corner of Diagonal and Morphett roads.
Mr Turnbull said more money would be needed from other levels of government.
But Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan has not committed to Mr Turnbull's plan and said the announcement fell well short of the funding required to upgrade the crossing.
He said the project would cost between $140 and $200 million in total, depending on how it was done.
City of Marion Mayor Kris Hanna disputed that figure, saying up to $110 million in total would be needed to finish the project.
He said the project would only get more expensive the longer it was left.
Crossing promise a 'vote changer'Mr Hanna said the upgrade would address one of the key issues in the area.
"There are more than 40,000 motorists a day who head through this crossing, very commonly experiencing one, three, five-minute delays," he said.
"But at peak hour motorists can sit there for up to 20 minutes.
"It is a very hot issue. I really think this is a vote-changer."
Mr Hanna said the council could not afford to contribute to the crossing upgrade and urged the State Government to back the project.
"We're not in the league of state and federal, I think everyone knows that," he said.
"We struggle to spend $10 million on a local sport facility, let alone tens of millions [on a project] which ultimately is the State Government's responsibility."
