The Cityringen automated metro line in Copenhagen, built by Salini Impregilo, has been launched in Denmark.
The Queen of Denmark, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Copenhagen Mayor Frank Jensen were part of the inaugural process.
Salini Impregilo CEO Pietro Salini said: “We are proud to celebrate today, the inauguration of Cityringen and to have had the opportunity to work on such an iconic project with the government, the city and the client.
“When we began this challenging project eight years ago, we were a very different company, a tenth the size of what Salini Impregilo is today. But we still put every effort into the project that was envisioned by a special class of leaders for the future of their residents.”
Cityringen Metro is a 15.5km underground circle line with 17 stations being developed as an extension to the Copenhagen Metro. The Copenhagen metro system will have a total length of 43km and more than 40 stations.
Cityringen Metro will be a driverless system operating round-the-clock and is expected to be accessed by approximately 72 million passengers annually. The trains on the line will travel at an average speed of 40km/h.
A joint-venture of Salini-Impreglio, Seli and Tecnimont, as well as the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT) carried out the civil engineering works.
The joint venture comprising COWI, Arup and SYSTRA received the civil works contract. SYSTRA will carry out civil engineering works for tunnels and underground structures, along with project management.
Ansaldo STS is the supplier of trains, power and communications systems, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), platform-edge doors and signalling system.
