Dr Long Troung and I have just published research on the 'Macroscopic Road Safety Impacts of Public Transport' using data from Melbourne, Australia. This uses a new approach to aggregate crash risk analysis associating it with PT use. Key findings:
Bus had the largest safety effect, mainly because it covers a higher share of the spatial area of the city; but mode shift to bus would be harder to achieve than to rail/tram for the same reason. Practitioners/ Planners/ Politicians; be sure to add safety benefits to your next transit project appraisal, particularly bus projects.
