The newly widened Purvis Lane is delivering quicker journeys and improved heavy vehicle access between the North Dubbo industrial precinct, the Newell Highway and the Golden Highway.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the complete reconstruction of Purvis Lane had transformed it into a high-productivity freight route suitable for road trains.
“The project was funded under the Roads to Recovery Program, which supports the maintenance of Australia’s local road infrastructure whilst also facilitating g reater access for Australians, improving safety and economic outcomes,” Mr McCormack said.
“From 2013–14 to 2023–24, the Australian Government will provide $6.2 billion under the Roads to Recovery Program, with an ongoing commitment of $500 million for each of the following years.”
New South Wales Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said work to widen the key eastwest distributor had improved access to major transport terminals catering for road trains at Higher Mass Limits.
“These upgrades have brought Purvis Lane to industrial distributor standards to form the initial stage of a freightway around Dubbo,” Mr Toole said.
“We’re proud to be supporting projects like this through the New South Wales Government’s Fixing Country Roads program because they’re making a real difference to local communities by boosting freight access and efficiency across the state’s road network.”
Federal Minister for Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government and Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said that the Australian and New South Wales governments’ record road investment across regional New South Wales was an acknowledgement of the growing freight task.
“The existing road was built more than 50 years ago and the new road will provide modern amenities for Dubbo while reducing travel distance for freight,” Mr Coulton said.
“The upgrade not only improves access for heavy vehicles and allows access for higher productivity vehicles but it also improves safety for all road users.”
State Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said the new layout would allow trucks to access adjacent properties without interrupting traffic flow.
“Projects like this are important because the regional freight task in New South Wales is expected to increase by 12 per cent to 286 million tonnes by 2036,” Mr Saunders said.
“This project has seen the existing two-lane road doubled in width to 15.5 metres. The two lanes are now 3.5 metres wide with two-metre-wide sealed shoulders, separated by a 4.5-metre turning lane.”

The works also included improvements to stormwater drainage, upgrades to street lighting and adjustment of existing industrial property accesses to the new freightway.
The $9.9 million project was jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $500,000 from the Australian Government’s Road to Recovery program, the Dubbo Regional Council committing $7.1 million and $2.3 million from the New South Wales Government’s Fixing Country Roads program.
