As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram tracks at the Elizabeth Street Tram Terminus. To minimise further disruption, tram track infrastructure on Elizabeth Street between Flinders Street and Collins Street will also be upgraded.
Tram tracks within the work-zone are approximately 25 years old and require renewing. This ensures Yarra Trams is able to maintain a safe and reliable tram network. The renewed track will deliver a better road surface for cyclists and tram passengers, produce less tram noise due to potholes, broken rails and wheel squealing, and will be quicker to repair in the future due to the use of new semi resilient materials.
Preliminary work track renewal
Preliminary work will begin on Saturday 11 February 2017 and continue until major works commence on Saturday 25 February 2017. Preliminary work will involve service proving, installation of conduits and the unloading and pre-welding of rails in preparation for the track renewal. Please note that associated noise of welding and grinding machinery should be expected during preliminary work.
Preliminary work overhead wire
Preliminary work on overhead wires will begin on Monday 23 January 2017 and will continue until major works commence. Works will occur after last tram services in the evening and first tram services in the morning.
Major work track mainteance and overhead
Major work will occur on Elizabeth Street between Flinders Street and Collins Street including the Elizabeth Street/Flinders Lane intersection. Works will commence at 2am on Saturday 25 February 2017 and continue 24 hours a day until 5am Wednesday 1 March 2017.
Route 19, 57 and
59 trams will be affected. For service change
details closer to the time, refer to signage on the network,
tramTRACKER or visit yarratrams.com.au
Due to the nature of works, there will be a number of road closures in place from 2am Saturday 25 February until 5am Wednesday 1 March 2017.
• Elizabeth Street will be closed between Flinders Street and Collins Street. • Flinders Lane will be closed between Russell Street and Queen Street.
Detours will be in place for the duration of the works, with motorists diverted around the work zone. Please allow extra time to make your journey.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety but footpaths will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses and residences on Elizabeth Street.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm. However there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5am Wednesday 1 March 2017.
We advise that it is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
