MORE job losses tipped for Orange Railway Station is 'death by a thousand cuts' for Countrylink according to the Rail, Tram and Bus Union.

Union secretary Nick Lewocki said Orange's Countrylink Travel Centre, located in the Railway Station, will be downgraded with the centre manager's job one of two positions to go.

"Since the government announced changes a couple of weeks ago, our phones have been running hot. People in the bush are concerned about their jobs and rightly so," Mr Lewocki said.

According to the union the current structure of staffing, which comprises a travel centre manager, customer attendant, two senior customer attendants and three travel consultants, will change with the job cuts and resulting reduction in services.

"Our understanding is the new staffing will be a customer attendant, three senior customer attendants and a booking office manager," he said.

"This isn't just about job losses. This is another example of RailCorp's inability to financially manage rail services in a way that meets the needs and expectations of NSW commuters.  

"RailCorp, supported by the State Government, decided to increase regional and rural fares by eight per cent while cutting 82 jobs across NSW CountryLink travel centres," Mr Lewocki said.

Mr Lewocki said a union delegate, who recently visited Orange, was impressed by what the area had to offer a Sydney rail traveller.

"Orange is a beautiful garden city with wineries and many other great attributes," he said.

"But promoting a place like Orange to people in Sydney, for example, is gone."

He said the closure of travel centres in Sydney which used to put together travel packages to places like Orange would have an impact on tourism.

Shadow Transport Minister Barry O'Farrell said CountryLink patronage had fallen 20 per cent over the past five years.

"These job cuts are a continuation of the Labor Government's failure to invest in and effectively market country rail services over the last decade."

A spokesman for Minister for Transport John Watkins said yesterday the Minister was unavailable for commenty.
