We enjoyed a lovely evening last Saturday, with the Nick Anchen-organised Climax trip from Emerald to Gembrook and return. The cold, wet and windy morning gave way to scattered cloud right about the time the Climax and her mixed train left Emerald Yard, stacked to the gunwales with firewood, with a bit extra in the NQR just in case...
The run to Lakeside was enjoyable, rolling through the forests and admiring the views. A quick stop at the lake for ER before heading to a photo stop at the taller Wright trestle. A great shot was had, and then onward to Cockatoo Creek for another shot. The famous Red Mud was in abundance at this spot, but some good shots were had of the mighty low range 8x8-wheel-drive Climax and train.
Heading up the hill to Cockatoo was great, hearing the little loco making 100mph noise at 10mph was great!
We waited at Cockatoo for the Up Gembrook to cross with 12A at the helm, before setting off up the climb to Gembrook for more shots. At milepost 38 it seemed that the Climax had run out of puff, so a brew-up stop was held. She had also been a very hungry engine, having consumed her entire entree and main course. Dessert was handed in from the NQR. A hungry loco indeed!
A few more photo stops in lovely forest locations, then onward to Gembrook. A couple more brew-up stops were required, then at the top of the grade it became apparent that Climax had finished her dessert and all her drinks as well... No fuel, no water, no steam... So we enjoyed a lovely afternoon hike into Gembrook, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Dinner at the station was delicious, slow cooked American BBQ - very good. I caught up with a few train friends, got the new PB book signed by Nick, and purchased a few other books to assist the Climax fund.
The Climax meanwhile, had been topped up from a garden hose and was being refilled with wood and water at the tank in Gembrook. Soon enough we were back on the train and heading out towards Cockatoo. A quick water stop, then a roaring climb out of Cockatoo Creek towards Lakeside. Not sure what happened - the loco sounded great and seemed to be pulling well, but there was a noise and the exhaust sound changed and we were stopping for a brew-up after a few minutes.
The trip into Lakeside included a few more brew stops, and on arrival 6A had been seconded from the Night Train to assist us back to Emerald. So we had 6A, Climax, our train and the Nigh Train on the back. Standing in the open NQR as 6A and Climax roared up the hill to Nobelius Siding was magnificent!
After picking up the Nigh Train pax at Nobelius Siding, it was a short run back up to Emerald.
A great day out, and a grand railway adventure (in spite of a couple of challenges along the way)! Thanks Nick for organising the trip, a great job all round. And thanks to the loco and train crew for getting us there and back - much appreciated.
