Each train will have three cars, one of which will be for the sole use of female passengers.
The first phase of the network was approved by India’s cabinet in December 2016 and comprises the 16.6km north-south Line 1 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area to Swargate and the 14.7km east-west Line 2 from Vanaz via the main station to Ramwadi.
Line 1 is partially underground, while the rest of phase one is elevated. The two lines intersect at Civil Court, and each line will have its own depot.
Alstom was awarded a contract to equip the two lines with CBTC in March.
Both lines are due to open in 2021.
