Your new Jolimont/MCG tram stop
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram tracks at the intersection of Flemington Road and Abbotsford Street in North Melbourne. To minimise future disruptions, Yarra Trams will also be repairing sections of tram tracks on Flemington Road between Abbotsford Street and Peel Street.
Tram tracks at the intersection of Flemington Road and Abbotsford Street are between 18 and 30 years old and require renewing. To minimise further disruption on Flemington Road in the future, sections of tram tracks on Flemington Road between Abbotsford Street and Peel Street will also be repaired at the same time. The renewed track will deliver a better road surface for motorists, cyclists and tram passengers, produce less tram noise and will be quicker to repair in the future.
Preliminary work will commence on Sunday, 26 June 2016 and continue until major works commence on Saturday, 2 July 2016. Preliminary work will occur on Flemington Road and will require the removal of some car parking spaces to facilitate the unloading and pre-welding of rails.
Major work will occur in two sections:
1. Track renewal works on Flemington Road at the intersection of Abbotsford Street. Work will commence at 1:30am on Saturday, 2 July 2016 and continue 24 hours a day until 5am on Monday, 11 July 2016. Major work will also occur on Abbotsford Street between Flemington Road and Erskine Street during this time.
2. Maintenance work on Flemington Road between Abbotsford Street and Peel Street. Work will commence at 4am on Saturday, 2 July 2016 and continue 24 hours a day until 4am on Monday, 4 July 2016.
Route 55, 57 and 59 trams will
be affected. Tram replacement bus services will be in place for the
duration of the major work period.
Please refer to signage on the network, on board brochures and tramTRACKER closer to the date.
Access for motorists will be maintained on Flemington Road in both directions for the duration of the project. Lane closures along Flemington Road will apply during the staging of works and motorists should allow additional travel time.
Major cross streets including Boundary Road, Gatehouse Street and Grattan Street will remain open for traffic across Flemington Road.
Abbotsford Street will be closed to all traffic between Flemington Road and Erskine Street for the duration of the project (1:30am on Saturday, 2 July 2016 until 5am on Monday, 11 July 2016) with all on-street parking removed within the work zone. Residents are advised to use parking within side streets during this time. Local access will be provided by traffic controllers.
The work zone will be fenced off for safety reasons but footpaths will remain open to allow pedestrian access to The Royal Children's Hospital, businesses and residences on Flemington Road.
Noise and dust
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work crews is unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6am and 10pm, however there may be a need to conduct noisy work outside these hours to ensure that the project is complete by 5am Monday 11 July 2016.
We thank you for your patience and regret any inconvenience caused by this essential repair work.
We advise that it is being performed in accordance with our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act 2006 (Vic).
Accordingly Yarra Trams will not be compensating third parties for any losses incurred during the conduct of the work.
