The European Parliament voted on December 14 to adopt the final wording for the market pillar of the Fourth Railway Package, concluding ‘almost five years of intense negotiations’ over the European Commission’s proposals.

Tabled by the European Commission in January 2013, the Fourth Railway Package includes six legislative measures aimed at 'completing the Single European Railway Area to foster European competitiveness and growth’.

EUROPE: The final wording for the three legislative measures in the technical pillar of the European Commission’s Fourth Railway Package was agreed on June 17 at a meeting between the Latvian Presidency of the European Council and the European Parliament’s Transport & Tourism Committee.

Coming a few days before the end of the Latvian Presidency, the ‘informal agreement’ was reached in the ninth trialogue meeting to consolidate the Commission’s proposals with the amendments requested by the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament.

The three legislative measures in the market pillar of the European Commission’s Fourth Railway Package were approved by the European Parliament’s Transport & Tourism Committee on July 12.

EUROPE: An informal agreement on the consolidated wording for the market pillar of the Fourth Railway Package was reached in Brussels on April 19, under the leadership of the Netherlands Presidency of the EU.
