Captrain Belgium, a subsidiary of the French Group SNCF Logistics, has acquired Belgian rail freight operator Railtraxx for an undisclosed amount.
The acquired entity will be merged with Captrain Belgium and continue to operate under the Railtraxx brand.
Formed in 2009, Railtraxx operates intermodal trains connecting the port of Antwerpen with destinations in Western Europe. It also offers ‘last mile’ terminal services.
Following the merger, the integrated company is expected to attract opportunities in a rapidly changing European rail freight market.
“The company is driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit, shares the same goal of sustainable, profitable growth and relies on an ambitious team of experts.”
SNCF has become the shareholder of the newly integrated entity.
Railtraxx owner Pieter Vanovermeire has been appointed as the CEO of the new combined company, which has a workforce of 120 staff.
SNCF Logistics Rail freight and multimodal business unit CEO Sylvie Charles said: “Captrain companies are already very active on the domestic German, Italian, Spanish and Polish markets, as well as on the major European corridors.
“Railtraxx is like a smart engine in our sector. It is the partner we were looking for to develop our position in Belgium and around the Port of Antwerp, a major European transport hub.
“The company is driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit, shares the same goal of sustainable, profitable growth and relies on an ambitious team of experts. This will be of great help for increasing the modal shift towards rail.”
Captrain, a global European transport brand of SNCF Logistics, was founded in 2000. It provides door-to-door rail freight and multimodal logistics services.
