The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) presented a Gold Award to the Gannett Fleming-AECOM Rail Road Expansion Partnership joint venture for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion Projectduring the Engineering Excellence Gala on April 13.
Gannett Fleming served as the managing partner of the team that provided preliminary engineering and managed the environmental impact study (EIS) with the goal to increase the capacity of the busiest commuter rail system in the country via planning, architectural and engineering services.
Officials said the joint venture was the backbone of the $2.6 billion expansion, which is one of New York’s most significant increases in capacity of the commuter railroad since the mid-19th century.
The project will add a third track along a 9.8-mile stretch of the railroad’s Main Line corridor from Floral Park to Hicksville, eliminate seven street-level grade crossings and revamp five stations and railroad infrastructure.
The team completed the EIS in less than a year, which was less than half the time it typically takes to finish a comparable transportation study, Gannett Fleming said.
Quick delivery of the draft EIS, final EIS, and a corresponding 600-page report proved to be invaluable for overall successful project completion.
The team developed and employed methods to complete preliminary engineering and set new standards for effective communication and coordination on a project with an unprecedented level of public involvement, officials said.
