Many stations in Melbourne need upgrading and are in need of urgent repair. For years we have neglected our railways and only now are we starting to play catch up. However, there is a significant issue with Gardenvale Station on the Sandringham Line. There are serious safety issues with the station and it needs a complete rebuild.
The platform itself has damage and is very slippery in wet weather. Fences have holes in them and the lighting can be very poor at night. The station building itself needs to be demolished as when the fire occurred only a patch job was done to restore the current building.
The platform too is very narrow, seriously narrow. One driver and another passenger today spent three minutes helping a wheelchair get onto the train today on the citybound platform and there was little space to manoeuvre. The gradient of the ramp was very steep, the lady in the wheelchair needed a push to get onto the train. There has also been an incident of a women falling onto the tracks before at this station because of the narrow platform. As an occasional user of the station, I have witnessed two near misses with wheelchairs at the station.
There is also a huge gap between train and platform and passengers often have to leap to get down from the train to the platform. For old people they often have slowly struggle down from the train. Not to mention the ramps on the Nepean Highway side and also the platform 2 Martin st side need to be rebuilt and regarded so that they are not so steep.
The station needs a total rebuilt ala Balaclava Station. Won’t estimate costs, however recent rebuilds such as Balaclava cost 13 Million and that included building it as a premium station. It is far too much of a safety risk for the disabled and older people not to mention all commuters that use the station.
