THOUSANDS of solar panels, which could fill a football field, will power the fast developing Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill.
The massive solar facility will generate around 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power 270 average homes each year.
All Sydney Metro trains will be serviced at this facility once the $8.3 billion rail network comes into operation in early 2019.
The driverless trains are set to travel at 100km an hour and arrive every four minutes.
Transport for NSW told the Rouse Hill Times the 3,287 panels have been installed on the roof of the maintenance building at the Cudgegong Rd, Rouse Hill, making this one of the largest solar power systems installed on a building in Australia.
The solar panel system covers more than 6,500 sqm, and will be also used to power some of the Sydney Metro railway stations as well as the maintenance facility, where Sydney’s new metro trains will be serviced.

“Sydney Metro is the biggest urban rail infrastructure investment in the nation’s history and we’re building it for the long term, to grow with Sydney and meet the needs of our global city for generations to come.”

Picture: Danny CaseyTransport for NSW said the trains will use high voltage power not related to the solar array. “However, the trains use regenerative braking — this means extra energy from a slowing train can be recycled back into the power system and used by nearby trains,” a TfNSW spokesman said.
In 2024, the metro rail will be extended from the north west into the Sydney CBD and beyond to Bankstown.
