The man, aged in his late 60s and the sole occupant of the four-wheel-drive car collided with the southbound train on De Laine Avenue at Edwardstown, in Adelaide's south, about midday today during a coughing fit.
The front of the vehicle was torn off completely in the incident, with the car wedged between the boom gates and the passing train.

Resident Bradley Bessell told 9News he ran from his home when he heard the crash before crawling under one of the train's carriages to rescue the driver.
"When I got there, I could see there were people there… I ended up going up to the guy and put pressure on his head to give the other guy a rest," he said.
As horrified train passengers watched on from the train, police blocked off the street and the driver was treated by paramedics before being taken to the Flinders Medical Centre in a stable condition.
