The contract, which has options for further deliveries up to 2030, includes the installation of both ERTMS Baseline 3.6 and the Finnish Specific Transmission Modules (STM-JKV) system. Hitachi says the technology will increase the interoperability and availability of the trains.
“Over the last few years, we have experienced an unprecedented increase in the Nordic ERTMS on board market, both for the upgrade of existing fleets and equipping brand new trains,” says Hitachi Rail vice-president for the Nordics Region, Mr Eric Morand.
VR Group awarded Stadler a €200m contract in March 2019 to supply the locomotives, which will be used primarily for freight operation. VR Group says the locomotives will improve operational efficiency in freight yards and on non-electrified lines, which make up 45% of the Finnish network.
