This week, London Bridge became the first underground station to be shortlisted for this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize.
The station is up against five other finalists fighting to be named the UK’s best new building, alongside a house made entirely of cork in Berkshire, a grass-roofed Scottish whiskey distillery, and the Weston Visitor Centre at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Sponsored by property investment company Almacanter, the RIBA Stirling Prize is judged on design vision, uniqueness, ability to engage and delight visitors, accessibility and sustainability, the building’s ability to fulfil its purpose, and client satisfaction.
Commenting on the nomination, Network Rail, Southern Region managing director John Halsall said: “Being named on the shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize is a great honour. It recognises that we have created an exciting and vibrant building which not only serves passengers but makes a wider contribution to architecture and the local community.”
Having been redesigned by Grimshaw Architects, London Bridge went through a £1bn redevelopment under the Thameslink Programme sponsored by the UK Government and reopened in 2018.
The transformation made the station’s concourse bigger than the pitch at London’s Wembley Stadium. As one of the busiest stations in the UK, London Bridge accommodates almost 55 million people on its platforms every year.
In the past, London Bridge has received a plethora of accolades, including the Architects Journal Building of the Year 2019, ICE Greatest Contribution to London award, the World Architecture Festival in the LBS Transport category, and the overall winner in the New London Architecture Awards for Transport and Infrastructure in sustainability.
Last year, the RIBA Stirling prize was awarded to Bloomberg, and this year’s winner is set to be announced on 8 October 2019 at the Roundhouse in London.
