The Andrews Labor Government’s record investment in Sunbury is delivering more trains, buses and car parks to get more locals where they need to go safer and sooner.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan joined Member for Sunbury Josh Bull at Sunbury Station today to confirm the location of more than 300 new car parks, providing much needed relief for locals who struggle to find a park.
The new spaces will be built in a multi-deck car park on the western side of the station, including accessible parking for people with disability, secure storage facilities for cyclists and better access for pedestrians.
The current deck will be extended, and an additional level will be added to the car park, making it quicker and easier for Sunbury residents to drive to the station and catch the train.
Sunbury will also be one of the biggest winners from the Metro Tunnel, which will slash travel times for Sunbury passengers by up to 40 minutes a day – 20 minutes in each direction to Parkville and St Kilda Rd.
Better signalling will be rolled out on the Sunbury line as part of the Metro Tunnel, with bigger and longer trains running on the line once the tunnel opens.
This will allow us to run more trains more often, providing room for an additional 113,000 passengers on the Sunbury line in the busy morning peak – that’s a 60 per cent increase in capacity.
The Labor Government has already added 10 weekly train services and introduced Night Network services, helping more locals get home safe from a night out in the city or shift workers to their jobs.
It comes on top of an extra 45 weekday bus services providing passengers with more frequent trips to and from Sunbury Station using Route 481, 483, 485, 486, 487, 488 and 489 services.
In more good news for Sunbury, a re-elected Labor Government will build the Melbourne Airport Rail Link through Sunshine. Not only is the Sunshine alignment the best option for Sunbury residents to get to and from the airport, it will also deliver better services and connections for the Sunbury line.
The Sunbury Station car park upgrade is part of the Labor Government’s $60 million investment to deliver more than 2,000 new car parks at busy metropolitan stations. Construction is expected to begin in 2019.
