A once-in-a-generation upgrade of regional rail is expected to inject millions into the Portland economy.
The project will allow rail cargo from the Murray Basin to be exported through the Port of Portland.
Announced on Monday, the $416 million Murray Basin Rail Project will standardise and upgrade the entire Murray Basin rail network, connecting the region’s primary producers to the harbour for exportation across the globe.
Lines from Geelong to Mildura, Manangatang, Sea Lake and Murrayville will be standardised, and the existing unused standard gauge connection between Maryborough and Ararat will be reopened.
