Victoria, 3-10 to 8-10-2004
As we arrived in Utica about 2:00 PM, we looked around the station. The inside is huge, reminds me of Grand Central. There is even a departure board showing when the trains are coming, and in my case, how later they are going to be.
Outside the station, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad had some interesting equipment sitting around. They were gearing up for the Polar Express train, scheduled to leave at 4:30.
There is also a NYC 0-6-0 sitting on a spur.
The bridge over the tracks is a great place to wait for trains, although a little toasty.
After waiting around for about 20 minutes, I spotted lights from the bridge and raced down to the platform, while my family stayed up just in time to see a Westbound intermodal race by.
As I got in position for the Amtrak Westbound, the rails started to sing, but not from the Amtrak, ANOTHER westbound intermodal.
A couple minutes later, the Amtrak finally came in, with a surprise: PIII heritage unit #704!
View from the bridge.
I quickly ran up the stairs and to the other platform to catch it going out. It was VERY LOUD under the road bridge.
We headed to the car, and saw this NYC RS-3 sitting in the yard.
As we were getting in the car, The thundering of an Eastbound intermodal caused me to jump out of the car and to the fence. Video, no pics unfortunately. But a westbound manifest officially sent us to our hotel.
And the trash…
We headed to our hotel, which had a great view of the station.
If you look closely, you can see the Polar Express leaving.
Look for a “Trackside Trek” video soon.NCT
