Are you ready for TRUMPEGEDDON on Tuesday?
The SunRail station at Church Street is ground zero for all the activities and supporters and protestors who will show up for President Trump’s official kick-off of his re-election campaign. Be ready for massive traffic gridlock all day Tuesday in downtown Orlando.
Church Street on Monday
The actual Trump rally will be at the Amway Center -- easiest to reach from the SunRail Church Street station. There will be a Trump tailgate party scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Church Street – adjacent to SunRail’s northbound platform at Church Street – a mere block from Amway.
In addition, we know of at least one anti-Trump rally scheduled for the Stonewall Bar on West Church Street near Westmoreland, just a few blocks away from the Amway Center.
In addition to the crowds, security will be tight, as it is for any presidential visit. Our advice is that unless you plan to participate in any of the political activities we strongly recommend staying away from downtown Orlando – especially the Church Street train station – on Tuesday.
We’re anticipating SunRail will attract many people who don’t usually ride the train so you can expect congestion around ticket vending machines and ticket validators at Church Street. Please be patient with the newbies.
Hopefully, most downtown employers will consider letting their employees work from home on Tuesday, or at least let them off early before the crush of people start arriving downtown during the evening rush hours.
Those who must be downtown for work might consider boarding SunRail at Lynx Central Station – just a couple of blocks away from Church Street. People might also consider using Lynx and the downtown Lymmo bus to skirt some of the traffic congestion.
SunRail deserves credit for doing its bit. As we reported last week in this place, SunRail will be offering special late train service after the Trump event to help people get back to their home train stations north and south of downtown. For details, click here.
We don’t have any inside knowledge, but we certainly hope that SunRail or local police agencies will provide extra security both on the Church Street platform and on trains after the Trump event.
We look forward to things going back to normal on Wednesday. See you on The Rail!
