The route alignment for the proposed Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) project is likely to be changed in the light of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project. This project will cross the city and go through Manesar, Rewari, Bawal and Dharuhera to Alwar. Gurugram Metro Rail was originally supposed to go from HUDA City Centre till Pachgaon Chowk in Manesar in the initial phase. It was to be expanded to Bawal in the second phase.
It is now expected to commence at Rajiv Chowk and go towards the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) via Vatika Chowk and finally reach Pachgaon in Manesar.
The matter was discussed at a recent Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) meeting. RITES, the government-appointed agency for metro projects, advocated that the proposed MRTS project required reconsideration in the view of the alignment of Gurugram metro as well as RRTS. Gurugram Metro was proposed as portion of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor being undertaken by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC).
Cost and funding
The corridor is approximately 30km long and is anticipated to cost the government around Rs 9,000 crore. “The metro project planned by HSIIDC should be now revised as a city metro up to Pachgaon. Although, the RRTS will anyway provide connectivity to the commuters going further than Manesar,” stated sources. Moreover, the initial MRTS route is already included in the route for the proposed Gurugram metro. The initial MRTS route includes HUDA City Centre and Subhash Chowk.
“In these conditions, HSIIDC is not likely to find justification from the viewpoint of ridership estimates,” said a GMDA official. Later, it was proposed that the MRTS project should be instead established from Sohna bus stand at Rajiv Chowk. Then, it should extend ahead to Manesar via the Southern Peripheral Road.
It has been advanced that the project be taken up by Haryana Metro Rail Transport Corporation.
Talks on the Gurugram Metro rail project commenced around 2012. It was earlier supposed to be launched in September 2017, but has been delayed several times.
