A Christmas dinner held at London Euston station last year for 200 homeless guests has been recognised by The National Rail Awards.
Network Rail, charity St Mungo’s and Streets Kitchen, a services provider to homeless communities across the UK, have won the judges’ special award for Euston Christmas 2017.
The awards, held by RAIL magazine on 13 September, recognise achievements by organisations in the rail industry in areas including safety, civil engineering and railway stations.
Network Rail, St Mungo’s and Streets Kitchen welcomed 200 specially invited homeless guests on Christmas Day, made possible by about 30 volunteers from Network Rail and volunteers from St Mungo’s and Streets Kitchen.
St Mungo’s provides a bed and support to more than 2,700 people a night across England. Streets Kitchen is a grassroots organisation that feeds 1,000 people on the streets every week.
The 200 guests, invited by St Mungo’s and Streets Kitchen, arrived at London Euston from 11:00 on Christmas Day. The station concourse was filled with decorations, and tables were laid so the guests could enjoy a full Christmas dinner and some company. Streets Kitchen made and served the dinner with help from the volunteers.
Network Rail won in multiple categories at The National Rail Awards, including major station of the year for London Bridge and major project of the year for Crossrail West - part of Europe’s biggest civil construction project.
The £1.4bn Crossrail West programme has upgraded almost every part of the 26-mile stretch of iconic Brunel-built railway between Maidenhead and London Paddington.
