A major street in Melbourne’s CBD has partially reopened after a gas leak during this morning’s peak hour shut down the road for trams and motorists.
All lanes were closed on Spencer St, between Lonsdale and Bourke streets, from 8am after a pedestrian reported the strong smell.
Just before 5.30pm, trams through the street had resumed but the southbound lanes in that section were still closed to traffic. Northbound lanes have reopened.
Emergency services said they were aiming to have the road open by this afternoon’s peak hour but that might not happen due to the complexity of the operation.
