Transport Heritage NSW (THNSW) wishes to clarify media reports surrounding rail heritage rolling stock currently stored at Broadmeadow.
THNSW is caretaker of the Broadmeadow site and the heritage rolling stock stored there on behalf of Transport for NSW who own both the site and rolling stock.
The rolling stock was originally relocated from Thirlmere to Broadmeadow in 2009 purely for storage purposes by the then Office of Rail Heritage to allow upgrade works to occur at Thirlmere.
The rolling stock was collected by volunteers of the former NSW Rail Transport Museum (NSWRTM) now THNSW, from 1962 onwards. The heritage fleet was first based in Petersham, then Enfield and finally, in the 1970s, relocated to Thirlmere. Ownership of most of the rolling stock was retained by the railways as part of their heritage collection and provided to the NSWRTM under a deed of gift arrangement.
The future of the Broadmeadow site itself is a matter for the NSW Government. THNSW’s focus is to ensure the ongoing safe and secure storage of a large quantity of rail heritage assets across NSW for the benefit of current and future generations.
