Thales has secured a contract to deliver the signalling system for the Finch West LRT system in Toronto, Canada.
The contract was awarded by Mosaic Transit Group, the consortium selected by Metrolinx last year to deliver the Finch West LRT project.
Under the terms of the contract, Thales will provide the light-rail line with its SelTrac Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) solution.
The 11km-long Finch West LRT will provide a transportation alternative to the northwest area of Toronto. The line will comprise 18 stops between Humber College and the Finch West subway station and will offer a connection to the current subway Line 1 Yonge-University.
Mosaic Transit Group will design, build, finance and maintain the line. Once complete, the Finch West LRT will be operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
The Finch West LRT project is scheduled to begin commercial service in 2023. Building the line is part of the Metrolinx’s efforts to reduce congestion across the Greater Toronto Area.
Additionally, the LRT system is expected to provide an economic boost to the underserviced northwest area of Toronto.
Thales urban rail signalling business vice-president and managing director Dominique Gaiardo said: “The Finch West LRT project allows Thales to be a big part of a world-class city’s expansion for the better.
“We are putting to work our local, made-in-Ontario SelTrac CBTC technology as a key part of this project that will bring long-awaited transit service to northwest Toronto.”
Recently, Thales secured another contract in Canada to provide its SelTrac CBTC system for the Confederation Line Extension project in Ottawa.
