The Andrews Government's endorsement of tourism and economic development in the regional centres of Ballarat, Maryborough, Castlemaine and Bendigo would have to be treated with the contempt it deserves.
The Goldfields Track is one example of tourism that was presented on WIN NEWS on Monday, 18 December. The Sebastopol Cycling Clubs spoke person, stated that walkers and cyclists could set off from Bendigo or Ballarat and walk or ride to Bendigo or Ballarat on the Goldfields Track and then return by train via Footscray and to Bendigo and Ballarat.
Talk about a disincentive to complete the Goldfields Walk and then return by train via Footscray or even go on the Goldfield Track.
It is quite obvious that the Andrews Government are too immersed in their BIG TICKET ITEM EXPENSE with rail infrastructure, to realise that it is the subtler and more practical aspects of rail development that brings true benefits to the community like the Bendigo - Ballarat - Geelong rail link.
The Auditor General has already taken the expense of the rail crossing removal extravaganza and has identified as that the crossing removal has produced negligible economic benefits or improved traffic congestion and only removing crossings in selective electorates and another 50 crossings that should be removed being ignored.
Writers of letters to editorial columns in the newspapers have also expressed their contempt for the Andrews Government rail crossing removal programs.
The Ballarat - Maryborough- Castlemaine- Ballarat - Geelong Rail Link would substantially increase tourism across the regions the rail corridor services. However, for the length of time the Andrews Government gazes vacuously down its own darkened tunnel, it will completely miss the point, the initiative and the opportunity of bringing the economic benefits to these regions of Geelong-Ballarat - Maryborough - Castlemaine and Bendigo through increased tourism.
