The Tansmashholding (TMH) prototype passenger coach built for the Egyptian National Rail (ENR) has been sent to Hungary to undergo certification tests.
The prototype coach previously underwent factory static tests conducted by the Tver Manufacturing Institute and the KTI Research Institute experts from Hungary. These tests assessed the strength of the bogie frames and the car body, as well as ventilation systems, electrical equipment, toilets and water supply.
KTI experts will now perform tests to examine the wheel load and car body weight, car body and bogie rotation, inside and outside noise level, braking system, and behaviour tests on the national rail network. The coach will then undergo a final endurance test run in Egypt.
In September last year, the Transmashholding-Hungary consortium secured a contract worth more than €1bn ($1.17bn) to supply passenger car trains to Egyptian National Railways (ENR). Under the five-year contract, the consortium will deliver 1,300 sitting passenger cars to ENR.
The consortium secured the deal after a competitive bid. Manufacturing companies from China, Italy, India, and Romania also participated in the bid.
The first batch of 30 serial coaches is expected to be delivered by the first quarter of next year.
The coaches will be made up of a stainless steel alloy body frame that offers moisture-resistant thermal insulation in nodes that are exposed to the weather. Each coach will have 88 seats, two toilets and LED lighting and have an expected life of 40 years in Egypt’s extreme climate.
TMH has also said that the coaches will be equipped with thermal sensors in axle-bearings. The trains will also feature two-stage spring suspension, along with an anti-skid system for safety.
