Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
Town Hall train station will reopen later this morning after an evacuation caused by a small fire.
Commuters were evacuated from Town Hall station to avoid smoke inhalation after a small fire broke out near an air conditioning unit just after 7.30am (AEDT).
Trains were passing through without stopping until the station reopens later this morning, a CityRail spokeswoman said.
There were delays on all suburban rail lines, excluding the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra lines, of up to 15 minutes.
State Transit bus drivers were recognising rail tickets on inner-city services, she said.
A NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said people would be allowed to return to the underground station only when all the smoke was cleared.
