A train from Sydenham to Bondi Junction was delayed by more than half an hour on Sunday afternoon at Redfern after it struck a pram on the tracks.
There was a baby in the pram, but the child was lifted unhurt from the pram before the train arrived.
A Sydney Trains spokeswoman thanked commuters and staff for rapidly helping the mother and her child.
"Both mother and child were safety removed from the corridor within a minute unharmed and emergency services attended the scene," the spokeswoman said.
One passenger on the train, which was set to stop at platform 11, said the train moved about a metre back before proceeding to the platform.
"We are going to move the train back slightly to free the pram," the train guard said over the intercom.
Transport apps showed that the train was running 34 minutes late "due to an object on the track at Redfern".
Police and ambulance officers attended the station at about 4.30pm.
Trains have now returned to normal after being delayed earlier in the afternoon.
