The incident occurred near the Bridge Street Light Rail stop at 1pm.
The tram was left with a massive dent and was brought to a halt near the corner of George and Essex streets, outside the EY Sweeney building.
The damaged tram was re-railed onto another track and shunted to Circular Quay's spare platform, where it will be formally inspected for damage.
Services resumed from Town Hall to Circular Quay about 4.30pm.
