Two locomotives which had been working on Eyre Peninsula were loaded onto trucks at Kimba and shipped to New South Wales last Thursday.
For the past 15 months, the two 830 locomotives have been housed in Port Lincoln and were brought to Kimba for loading.
The Australian Railroad Group sold the units to the Rail Technology Support Group (RTSG) which in an Australia-wide company.
The engines will be taken to New South Wales where they will be reconditioned and refurbished and then will be used for similar work, transporting grain around New South Wales.
Victorian company Transport Needs Australia was employed to manage the logistics involved in shifting the engines and company director Theo Dinnessen travelled from Melbourne to oversee the project.
James Contracting Supplies freighted the engines to New South Wales by road and Max Cranes from Port Augusta lifted them.
Mr Dinnessen explained even though the units weight only 72 tonnes each, two 100-tonne cranes were needed because of the reach needed to load the units onto the trailers.
Kimba was used as the location for the transfer as it was the eastern most point and, as Eyre Peninsula's entire track is narrow gauge, the trains could not be driven off along the railway.
The entire operation took quite a few hours, exceptional timing and coordination, as well as a lot of precise manoeuvring. Mr Dinnessen said rail companies often moved their equipment in this way.
