Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne and Rajinder Pryor, business manager for the Digital Railway Programme at Network Rail, were both among the winners at the Women in Rail Awards on Thursday 19 April.
At the Women in Rail Awards’ first ever ceremony in London, which marked Women in Rail’s fifth anniversary, Rajinder was named Inspirational Woman of the Year and Mark received the Judges’ Special Award.
Other Network Rail employees shortlisted for the awards included Claire Volding, local operations manager – shortlisted for Rising Star of the Year – and Nicola Benjamin, quality and assurance manager, Digital Railway – shortlisted for the Inspirational Woman of the Year title.
Anthea Hague, head of sustainability and consents for Network Rail’s Infrastructure Projects (IP) division, was in the running for a Women in Rail award and Maurisha Allen, assistant commercial manager, IP, was an Apprentice of the Year nominee.
Inspirational Woman of the Year
Rajinder was recognised for her work with promoting diversity and inclusion and sharing her story to raise awareness of violence against women. She said:
“I’m proud to have won Women in Rail’s Inspirational Woman of the Year 2018 award.
“The rail industry which Network Rail is part of builds the railway, it builds bridges and stations but it also builds its people – the most vital asset of all.”
Rajinder shared her deeply personal story of honour-based violence and domestic abuse for the first time at an event to mark International Women’s Day in 2017, and she now shares her journey at events around the country.
“My journey of self-empowerment – where I took control and seized power to ultimately change the course of my own life – is a story with lessons for us all to draw from.
“2017 was an extraordinary year in my life, and becoming an active member of the Network Rail Inspire gender equality network was a turning point.
“Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted and to those that won.”
Judges’ Special Award
Mark Carne was presented with the Judges’ Special Award in recognition of his work towards making a significant difference to female representation in the rail industry.
“I’m really proud of the recognition that this gives to the strides we are making in this important area.
“We’ve made great progress, but we know we can go further still. By the end of Control Period 6, in 2024, our target is to increase the number of women in our business by 50 per cent. Not only is this the right thing to do, but the business benefits of diversifying our workforce means we are equipping ourselves to deliver the improved railway that Britain needs.”
