Australia’s Government of Victoria has started survey works at the state’s Traralgon station as part of its A$530m Gippsland Line upgrade project.
Jointly funded by the federal and state governments, the scheme aims to increase rail services to the eastern region of Victoria.
Experts are using laser scanners to assess ground and environment conditions, which will also enable the construction of another platform at Traralgon Station.
The project will involve the construction of second platforms at Morwell, Bunyip and Longwarry stations, as well as track duplication and improved signalling along the line.
“Early works are well underway on this vital project, which will upgrade track, stations and signalling to deliver the services Gippsland passengers deserve.”
Victoria Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: “Early works are well underway on this vital project, which will upgrade track, stations and signalling to deliver the services Gippsland passengers deserve.”
“We’re boosting services, delivering new carriages and improving mobile coverage to make catching the train quicker, easier and more comfortable in eastern Victoria.”
A six-week geotechnical investigation programme on the rail line between Bunyip and Longwarry was recently completed as part of the scheme. The investigation will help Rail Projects Victoria devise a detailed plan to deliver the project.
Under the upgrade works, more than 90 new car parks have been added at Traralgon Station, with a new entrance to the station currently under construction.
The Moe, Morwell and Trafalgar stations are also being upgraded as part of this investment.
Last month, Victoria announced an A$130m ($96m) programme to upgrade and decongest the Ballarat rail network.
The project will involve multiple track and signalling improvement works to ensure a swift freight movement from the Murray Basin region to the ports.
