The government of Victoria in Australia has awarded two contracts to remove five level crossings on the Frankston line and one at Clyde Road on the Pakenham line.
This is part of the government of Victoria’s programme to remove 75 level crossings by 2025. It has said that these crossings are congested and dangerous.
It has already awarded 50 level crossing removal contracts in Melbourne and 30 crossings have already been removed.
The government of Victoria also awarded an A$744m ($508.6m) contract to a partnership of Lendlease, Acciona Coleman Rail, WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne. This covers work at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach.
The contractors will eliminate level crossings at Edithvale Road, Station Street, Argyle Avenue, Chelsea Road and Swanpool Avenue. Work also includes the lowering of the Frankston line.
The government of Victoria will construct new, accessible stations that sport a ‘coastal look’ at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach. It will also extend Thames Promenade road to the Nepean Highway at Chelsea so that it can alleviate traffic.
It awarded an A$166m ($102.6m) contract to a partnership of Fulton Hogan and Metro Trains Melbourne for the removal of the Clyde Road level crossing and the lowering of the road below the Pakenham line.
The government of Victoria expects to improve traffic flow for the 22,000 drivers who access the crossing daily.
It pledged a $3bn investment to revamp the Frankston line. The new Carrum Station is slated to open in February and work will commence in Cheltenham and Mentone.
Premier Daniel Andrews said: “We’re keeping our promises and removing dangerous and congested level crossings.”
“Every level crossing removal makes local streets safer, improves traffic flow and allows us run more trains – and every one of them creates Victorian jobs.
