Stacks of railroad ties caught on fire in Oakland, Calif., on May 11. The fire was located along railroad tracks and just off Highway 880 .

It took firefighters about an hour to get the scene under control. Officials say the ties are fuel injected to keep them from molding, which created intense smoke and flames.

Public Works and Union Pacific crews were cleaning up the area on Monday afternoon. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
