The Government of Western Australia (WA) has unveiled the design of its level crossing removal project at the Denny Avenue level crossing in Kelmscott.
The design, which is the government’s first Metronet level crossing removal project, will see the development of an underpass and elevated rail line at the parallel Davis Road in order to remove the level crossing on the 170m-long Denny Avenue road.
The project will be undertaken as part of the 2018-19 State Budget that includes the investment of A$69m ($52m) into works to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as to remove risks to rail operations.
It is also expected to improve traffic connections between Albany Highway, major retail precincts, schools, community services and transport connections.
“This is another Metronet election commitment being delivered, one that will improve safety, enhance the town centre and provide a boost to local jobs during construction.”

“Denny Avenue is one of the most dangerous level crossings on our rail network and it drives locals mad. It’s been talked about for years, and now we’ve got on with the job of providing the solution and the funding to finally fix this problem and eliminate the risk of accidents between trains and cars.”
The government expects to issue bids for the construction of the new design in the coming months. Construction is scheduled to begin next year.
The Metronet has also been directed to consider various town centre upgrades that can be achieved within the project.
The 2018-19 State Budget is also planning the removal of three other level crossings at Caledonian Avenue, Maylands, Oats Street, Carlisle, and Wharf Street in Cannington.
