Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
The construction of the Western Sydney Metro, which will connect Greater Parramatta and the Sydney Central Business District (CBD), will commence next year.
The proposed metro line will have seven stations. The underground train will stop in Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and the Bays Precinct.
It is expected to reduce travel time from Parramatta to Sydney CBD by 20 minutes.
Premier of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian stated that the construction work for site preparation and tunnelling work will start at the Bays Precinct.
The initial work includes investigations, site surveys and early works such as road relocation.
The government is also planning to add two more locations at Pyrmont and Rydalmere. Work is underway to determine the location of the Sydney CBD metro station.
The government noted that the affected property owners and tenants will be informed by the project team.
Berejiklian added: “The Western Sydney Metro will fundamentally change how we get around our city for generations to come, connecting Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD with fast, safe and reliable metro rail.
“We’ve successfully delivered the North West Metro Line early and $1 billion under budget, the next line from Chatswood to Sydenham and Bankstown is on track to open in 2024, and now the next Metro project is underway.”
Minister for Transport Andrew Constance stated that the metro project is expected to create 10,000 direct jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs.
The government is also searching for global suppliers to build 50km-long tunnels, which will be the longest railway tunnels in the country.
