ADELAIDE'S railway services will be severely disrupted in the new year as the lines are prepared for electrification and undergo upgrades.
The Noarlunga and Belair lines will be most affected, though closure of Adelaide Railway Station in January will impact on all train commuters.
Adelaide Railway Station will be closed from January 2 to February 3, taking advantage of the quietest time of the year to allow electrification works and rebuilding of the city rail yard.
Access to some free bus transport has been promised.
The Belair line will be closed from January 2 to mid 2013, while a $110m Goodwood junction is built, to allow the separation of freight trains and passenger services.
The Noarlunga line will be closed from January 2 to September to allow new sleepers to be laid from Oaklands Park to the city, in preparation for electrification of the line.
The Tonsley line, which also will be electrified, will remain closed for the duration of the Noarlunga line works.
The Outer Harbor and Grange lines will continue to operate during the closure (terminating at Woodville) and the Gawler line (terminating at North Adelaide), with shuttle bus services completing journeys to the Adelaide Railway Station.
Mr Conlon said while the Belair line would be most affected, the closure of the Adelaide Railway Station in January would impact on all train commuters.
"We believe we can take advantage of one closure to do all the works at once and minimise the disruption as much as possible, which is why we will also undertake the construction of the Goodwood Junction," he said.
"When complete, the junction will reduce traffic delays on Cross Rd by up to five minutes." Opposition Transport spokeswoman Vickie Chapman said it was unfair for the Government to make the announcement without giving passengers details of substitute services.
"They (passengers) are entitled to have the detail about what buses are going to be running from where, so they can plan their journey," she said.
Ms Chapman asked how the Government was going to find buses for substitute services.
"We are struggling with enough buses to prop up the current service that is already failing," she said.
