Taken not quite 25 years ago there have been many changes since I captured Australian National locos broad gauge 702/CK2/838 passing through the back roads of Birkenhead with the daily limestone train from the Barossa Valley to the soda ash plant at Osborne.
Note the dual broad/standard gauge track, and the 'Big John' coke hoppers at the front of the train carrying coke to fuel the furnaces at the plant. Note also the open spans of the Birkenhead bridge above the hoppers.
The 'Stonie' no longer runs following the closure of the soda ash plant in 2014.
Australian National ceased to exists in November 1997 after its sale to Genesee & Wyoming
702 & 838 have both been scrapped while CK2 has been rebuilt and renumbered
A new bridge over the Port River has since replaced this particular section of track.
The light green wharfside sheds to the left of the lighthouse have been demolished in recent weeks.
