During late 2018, it was announced that Great Southern Rail (Now renamed Journey Beyond Rail) were introducing a new luxury passenger service known as ‘Great Southern’ between the cities of Adelaide and Brisbane. The service is essentially a revival of the former Southern Spirit journey which operated between the two locations from January 2010 to February 2012, the Great Southern’s 3 day and 2 night trip provides off train excursions for the passengers within Victoria’s Grampians region, the Australian capital of Canberra and Coffs Harbour before completing their journey. Pacific National have the ‘Hook & Pull’ contract for all JBR services and have painted locomotives NR30 and NR31 in the ‘Great Southern’ livery during late 2019.
Journey Beyond Rail’s inaugural Great Southern service 6AT8 from the Adelaide Parklands Terminal to Acacia Ridge rolls upgrade past the searchlights at Balhannah with Pacific National units NR30/NR31 in charge of 28 carriages on Friday the 6th of December 2019. The train is running to Stawell to allow passengers to detrain for the first excursion within the Grampians before they rejoin the consist later in the evening at Ararat. Pacific National provide the locomotives and crews for all JBR services, whilst JBR manage and operate the train and the rolling stock.
